Lake Hartwell is a large, clear-water reservoir on the Savannah River, straddling the border of Georgia and South Carolina. Created and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it covers more than 56,000 acres with hundreds of miles of shoreline. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills, parks and wooded coves providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including herons, ospreys, and bald eagles. The lake is known for its excellent boating, fishing, and recreation, offering wide-open water for cruising and sailing alongside quiet inlets for swimming and anchoring. It is especially popular for bass, striped bass, and catfish fishing, as well as for hosting major fishing tournaments. With its clean water and extensive park system, Hartwell combines natural beauty with easy access and is considered one of the premier recreational lakes in the Southeast. Lake Hartwell is known for its relatively clear water compared to many Southeastern reservoirs, making it especially popular for swimming, snorkeling, and watersports.
